I shared in her delight even though it was raining in Essex. It brought to mind the first meeting of Josep and Karina. When they touch for the first time and the world turns upside down. The sun bursts out and lights up their love for all to see. Also in this scene Karina’s dancing freckles continue to play an intriguing role in characterising the magic that underpins the relationship of the One Souls.
Although a slight artistic exaggeration it was actually inspired by the first kiss I shared with my wife. Electricity jumped between us, sparking from lip to lip. It sealed our love right from the start. And it keeps on growing.
As she rose slowly to her feet he did not know what to do other than to stand his ground and hardly dared to breath. Josep knew instinctively that this radiant being was indeed the Lady Karina and that all he had heard and learned in the last few days was as nothing. Now that she stood just a few short feet away and was moving slowly toward him his mind emptied completely, his tongue stuck to the roof of his mouth and he suddenly believed he had lost the power of speech.
He had never before understood what it might mean to fall in love. It was not something he had spent any time thinking about and the pounding of blood in his temples made it difficult to think at all. His immediate impressions were of feeling completely overwhelmed as wave after wave of panic swept over him from head to toe. He dreaded the need to find a voice, as he was unsure if he would ever speak again. Her eyes flashed and flickered emerald through green to flashing red and yellow and he could count each and everyone of the splash of freckles that danced across her cheeks and eye lids. When she spoke Josep almost collapsed into a useless heap and realised he had been holding his breath.
‘So you have found me.’ she whispered as he dragged in an enormous lungful of air, now fully laden with the intoxicating scent of this fabulous being. He wondered what she meant by these particular words. How did she know he had been looking for her? What did she know of him and the arrogant Charalambus? How could she even speak to him if she knew he had been charged by the old rogue, with the task of stealing the heart of a lady?
Before he could un-stick his tongue she continued.
‘Anova charged Mr Snedding the concierge with the task of telling me that a noble looking old gentleman accompanied by his young ward had enquired about my mother and father.’ She paused as the musical rhythm of her voice washed over Josep and the surge of power he had felt charge through his body at every word, threatened to tear him into pieces. He was barely able to contain himself and clenched his fists together tightly.
‘Anyway, my grandfather always said somebody would come and when he came I would know.’ She put out a hand and touched Josep’s arm and the whole world seemed to explode.
They both clung to one another as the world turned inside out. A great roaring wind raged through the old tent and ripped at the ragged patched up roof. Support ropes stretched and creaked as the makeshift field hospital strained to be released. With a squeal of snapping cables and splintered wood the whole thing was torn into pieces and sent flying off, whipped high into the air by the precipitous whirlwind. As bits and pieces of canvas fluttered all around they held each other’s gaze, lost in a moment of shock and confusion as a column of sunlight bathed everything in a calming balmy afterglow.
After a moment of absolute stillness, suddenly all around became a seething mass of writhing groaning people, as hitherto broken silent bodies seemed once more to regain their hold on life. Josep was completely stunned and Karina shook him gently as she whispered, ‘Grandfather told me that my world would be split asunder when I met the one soul.’ She pulled him gently away from the growing clamour of the miraculously healed. The charge of electricity still surged through his body with every touch but much to his relief the initial explosion did not recur. Josep was not sure if he would have been able to withstand such ecstasy on a regular basis.
